Having located Jeremiah Smith, Mulder and Scully are sent to protect him from an old adversary. Jeremiah Smith is their only link to the truth about an alien colonization plan. This might be Mulder's only hope of saving his mother life. Scully's investigation reveals five identical men named Jeremiah Smith, who were involved in the secretly cataloguing of the human race. Why? Meanwhile the Cigarette Smoking Man's investigation identifies Mr X as a traitor. He too is gunned down which leaves Mulder one final ambiguous clue to the Truth...

When a young woman is kidnapped, and her boyfriend is murdered in North Michigan, passport photographs taken moments before reveal nightmarish images of the woman. Mulder is fascinated by the pictures, believing them to be evidence of psychic photography, images created on film using the power of the mind. After the victim is found alive but lobotomized, they are unable to do anything but repeat the word 'unruhe', German for unrest. When a second victim is taken, Scully makes a break-though and arrests a suspect, Gerry Schnauz. But then the hunter becomes the hunted, and the only hope Mulder has is to study the photographs and get inside Schnauz's mind.

When the body of a malformed newborn baby is found in a shallow grave in a small town in Pennsylvania, Mulder and Scully are sent to investigate at the request of FBI, also to help the town sheriff, Andy Taylor. Neither Mulder or Scully believe the case is an X-file, until they come across the Peacock clan, a local family with many years of inbreeding, their bodies are deformed and souls twisted into something less than human. There are now just three brothers. Mulder and Scully suspect the brothers had kidnapped a woman to bear their children. But the truth, like the family itself is far more sinister.

Four African-American men disappear off the streets of Philadelphia. The latest body is void of pigmentation. Scully believes it might be caused by some unknown ailment, the autopsy however, reveals his pituitary gland had been destroyed. Mulder's investigation hints at the involvement of the mythical Teliko, a evil spirit of the air, who emerges at night to suck the life and colour out of their victims. Scully is skeptical until they arrest a suspect, whose hospital tests reveal he also does not have a pituitary gland.

The Temple of the Seven Stars, a religious cult who are believers of reincarnation are brought to the attention of the FBI. After an informant calls with accusations of child abuse and weapons stockpiling. Fearing another Waco, the FBI raid the cult compound. Mulder and Scully are part of the raid team, they discover Vernon Ephesian, the cult's charismatic leader, and his six wives in their hiding place in an underground bunker. Mulder is strangely drawn to Melissa, one of the wives. The two agents take the cult members into custody, but there is no evidence of weapons or child abuse. During an interrogation, Melissa is determined to be the informant who called the FBI, she also is suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder. Mulder connects with the idea that there may be evidence of past lives.

Mulder and Scully are called to investigate a plastic surgeon goes crazy during surgery and kills his patient, he then claims that it was a case of demonic possession. When a second surgeon kills a patient, the investigation narrows in on Nurse Waite, who was at the surgery ten years earlier, when several of similar murders occurred. Suspicions are confirmed after Nurse Waite tries to kill one of the surgeons, Dr Franklin. But is she just trying to protect the patients?.

Mulder and Scully meet with Frohike at the Lone Gunman offices. Frohike informs them about the secret past of the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man, who, seems always to be one step ahead of them. They learn how the Cigarette Smoking Man, orphaned after the death of his parents, was recruited by the government when he was an Army Captain. Quickly becoming a powerful player in the shadowy world he now inhabits, he works diligently to conceal the truth at all cost. Always shadowing Mulder and Scully, as they work on the X-files, could it be that they too are a part of the Cigarette Smoking Man's plans?.

HEARTS (Aired - 12/15/96)
Mulder is haunted by a series of vivid dreams, that lead him to discover the buried bones of a murdered child, Mulder recognizes the M.O. of the murderer is identical to serial killer John Lee Roche, whom Mulder had profiled in one of his first cases. From 1979 to 1990, Roche abducted 13 young girls, strangled them and kept heart shaped material he cut from their clothes as trophies. When the body is identified, it indicates that Roche began his killing spree as early as 1975. Following another dream, Mulder finds Roche's trophies, that reveal that there are 16 victims, not the 13 noted. In his latest dream, Mulder relives his sisters abduction, this time the abductor is not an alien, but Roche. Mulder struggles with what might be the truth about what happened to his sister.

Mulder receives an anonymous tip about a right-wing militia group planning an Oklahoma style bombing. The informant it turns out is Alex Krycek, rescued from the missile silo by the Militia group. Krycek manages to persuade Mulder so that he can help bring down the Cigarette Smoking Man and the shadowy Syndicate he is part of, despite his personal loathing of Krycek, Mulder reluctantly believes him. Especially after he helps Mulder and Scully intercept a Russian courier's parcel, which contains a 4 billion year old extra-terrestrial rock. A government exobiologist drilling into the rock is attacked by black worms. Mulder seeks out his UN contact who informs him that the Russian courier's destination was Tunguska, Mulder remembers this as the site of a massive explosion after a fireball crashed there in 1908.

Mulder travels to Tunguska, but is imprisoned in a Siberian Gulag, he discovers that prisoners who are injected with 'Black Cancer' soon die. Mulder, driven by his hatred of Krycek, manages to escape. A former KGB assassin, Peskow, is brought out of retirement by the Russians for a clean-up mission. Back in Washington Scully investigating the Black Worms, is due to testify to a Senate Subcommittee hearing, but someone with a different agenda focuses on the whereabouts of Agent Mulder, not the origin of the extra-terrestrial Black worms. Unwilling to reveal Mulder's location, Scully is saved from contempt charges when Mulder returns to the Senate hearing and manages to persuades the Senate to adjourn the hearing until further evidence can be presented. But Peskow is one step ahead of the two agents, there is nothing they can do as evidence is systematically destroyed.
When a woman linked to two brothers is found dead and mutilated in a Migrant Workers Camp located in the San Janquin Valley. Mulder and Scully investigate an eyewitness who recalls three loud booms, a blinding light, and a sudden downpour of hot yellow rain. Evidence Mulder recalls as Fortean events, strange occurrences linked to alien encounters. The eyewitness believes it was El Chupacabra, a hairless creature from Mexican folklore. Scully is skeptical, believing instead in a jealous member of the love triangle, until the autopsy reveals the dead woman's body, is covered with green fungal growth. Mulder interviews one of the brothers, who blames the killing on the other, missing since the woman's death. As they track the missing brother, more fungi is discovered on other bodies, they then wonder if they are on the trail of some mythical beast.

After a Jewish man, Isaac Luria is murdered by three youths in what appears to be hate-killing, one of youths is strangled by an unknown assailant. Mulder and Scully are called to investigate. They try to discern whether or not vigilantes are to blame, or if it is the work of a higher force. The case takes an odd twist when the late Luria's finger prints are found on the dead youth's body. The case then takes on another twist when the second of the youths is murdered attempting to dig up Luria's grave. Mulder makes a break through, with the possible identity of the unknown assailant....A Golem, a creature from Jewish mythology. A living being formed from the very earth itself by a righteous man.

AGAIN (Aired - 02/02/97)
Handsome divorcee Ed Jerse gets drunk and has a Betty Page type tattoo with the words 'never again' put on his arm, he subsequently hears a woman's voice taunting him. He then attacks and kills, a neighbour, believing her to be the source of the voice. Meanwhile Mulder, forced to take time off or loose pay, is side-lined as Scully is left to work on her own. Angry at Mulder for telling her to stake out a Russian who claims to know something about UFOs, she tails the Russian to a tattoo parlour and soon discovers he is just an extortionist, who knows nothing about X-files. She then meets Ed Jerse at the Tatoo Parlor, there to get his troublesome tattoo removed. The pair connect and a relationship blossoms until Scully finds out about the neighbour's death, Ed then confides to her about the voice he hears. Scully believes the voice is an auditory hallucination brought on by a chemical in the tattoo ink. She tries to persuade Ed to regain control of himself before he kills again.

BETTS (Aired - 01/26/97)
Mulder and Scully are brought in to investigate the disappearance of the body of Leonard Betts, a paramedic decapitated when the ambulance he was traveling in was hit by a truck. Scully believes someone has taken the corpse to sell the body parts. A security camera's footage, shows Leonard Betts' body with distortion around the head apparently walking out of the hospital. They find Leonard's head and as Scully performs an autopsy on it, the eyes suddenly open. Tissue samples from the head reveal it was riddled with cancer, Mulder begins to theorize that Leonard Betts could be the next step in mankind's evolutionary development, does he possesses seemingly unimaginable regenerative powers?. Further evidence suggests that Leonard Betts ingests cancerous tissue in order to survive.
If female abductee's who also contracted cancer after having their implants removed. The two agents go to the home of Betsy Hagopian, to find that she had died two weeks earlier. During a search of the house, they realize that someone is accessing computer files by phone, the call is traced and a man, Kurt Crawford, is taken into custody. He claims to be part of the same UFO network that Betsy belonged to, and he was copying the files before the government destroyed them. Scully visits the last abductee still alive, Penny Northern, who is in hospital, her doctor, Dr Scanlon appears to have isolated the cause of her cancer. Scully then books into the hospital for treatment. While Mulder enlists the help of the Lone Gunman, to break into a fertility clinic where all of the abductees had been treated.

Lieutenant General MacDougal is killed in the back of his limousine, his driver is then suspected, especially after he is linked to a Paramilitary group called the Right Hand. But a lab test reveals that he had not fired a weapon. A number of high-ranking military officials were due in for a re-dedication ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial. Skinner assigns Mulder and Scully to investigate the Right Hand group and it's leader Denny Markham. Markham gives the two agents a photograph of a Green Beret, Nathaniel Teager, captured by the Viet Cong in 1971, freed by Markham's group in 1995 who then disappeared after US Government commandos attempted to kidnap him. When another General is killed and Teager's shadowy image is caught on security camera, Skinner is outraged. Mulder believes that Teager has learned from his capture, the ability to hide himself from a person's field of vision. The race is then on to stop the seemingly unstoppable assassin.

(Part One)
Mulder and Scully are approached by Sharon Graffia, the sister of Max Fenig, an abductee they met in Wisconsin following numerous UFO sightings. (see 'Fallen Angel'). Sharon explains that Max was a passenger on flight 549 that had crashed two hours previously, and Max had asked her to contact Mulder and Scully if anything happened to him. Mulder and Scully join the NTSB team investigating the cause of the crash. Mulder confronted with an apparent time discrepancy between the official time of the crash and the time displayed on watches of the passengers. He suspects the aircraft might have encountered a UFO. The theory is given more credit, after tape recordings have the pilot referring to an 'intercept', and after a survivor is found who, Scully concludes had been exposed to radiation.

As the investigation continues into the cause of the crash of flight 549, Mulder is taken into military custody while inspecting what he believes is the crash site of a UFO. Records reveal that Sharon Graffia is not Max Fenig's sister but a fellow patient from his mental institution. Mulder, released by the military, joins Scully in a search of Max's mobile home, they discover a video tape that shows Max claiming that he has actual physical evidence that the military is using technology from recovered UFOs. Mulder believes that Max had the evidence with him on the plane when the plane was intercepted. The military had dispatched a jet that shot down the UFO, causing the jet to spin out of control and crash.

Mulder and Scully investigate after Lucas Menand, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is hit by a bus after an elderly man told him he would be (hit by a bus) just moments before. The Campus Security Guard who arrested the elderly man for harassing Menand, is found frozen to death. A second researcher, injected by the elderly man, is also found frozen. Tests revealed that he was exposed to some unidentifiable chemical compound. A compound that another researcher recognizes as a chemical currently being engineered but not yet invented. It appears that the elderly man is using technology from the future to change the present and thus alter the future.

POTATOES (Aired - 04/20/97)
An expectant mother Amanda Nelligan gives birth to a baby with a four inch tail in Martinsburg, West Virginia. It is the latest of five such births in a city with less than 15,000 people. Scully believes that something in the local environment may be the cause of the birth defect. After an interview, Amanda, claims the baby's father is Luke Skywalker! Scully discovers that the five children all born with tails, share the same father. The five women also share the same fertility specialist, Dr Alton Pugh. At Dr Pugh's office, they find couples confronting Dr Pugh about the births. Mulder encounters a janitor with a scar at the base of his spine, Eddie Van Blundht, who runs away, but is caught and taken into custody. Tests reveal that Eddie fathered all five of the children, while the each mother claims to have slept with no one other than their husbands After Eddie escapes from custody, Mulder and Scully search for him, a search made more difficult because Eddie seems to have the ability to change his form, but is eventually captured in a most unlikely place.

SUM (Aired - 04/27/97)
Jane Brody, a mail sorter with a delivery company, is stung to death by a swarm of bees, in the company bathroom. Detective Ray Thomas e-mails the details to Mulder, but Assistant Director Skinner intercepts and deletes the file, then begins a cover-up. He incinerates Jane Brody's body, and posing as Mulder swaps a vial of Jane Brody's blood with another sample. Skinner is met by Ray Thomas, who believes him to be Mulder, tells him that there is not enough evidence for a case. Back in Washington, Mulder pays Skinner a visit explaining that someone is covering up the details about the bee attack, and the death of Ray Thomas. Skinner meets the Cigarette Smoking Man and accuses him of killing Ray Thomas. It is then revealed that Ray Thomas was killed by a government issue gun, Skinner realizes his own gun is now missing and he is being framed. When a photograph depicts Skinner with Ray Thomas, Mulder accuses Skinner of working with the Cigarette Smoking Man from the beginning.

When Angie Pintero, the owner of a bowling alley sees the body of an injured girl inside a pinsetter carriage, he rushes outside to get help, only to discover a crowd gathered around the lifeless body of the same girl he saw inside. Mulder and Scully interview Angie, and Mulder comes to the conclusion that Angie encountered the ghost of the dead girl. This is the third encounter,the result of three other dead girls being found in as many weeks. The only clue in the latest incident being the phrase 'She is me' written on the bowling lane where Angie had encountered the spirit. An anonymous call to the police about the murdered girls also used the same phrase. The agents trace the call to the New Horizen Psychiatric Center, to a mentally disturbed patient, Harold Spuller, who fits the profile Scully has of the killer. Mulder believes that the apparitions are the key to the case.

After a vivid dream, Mulder wakes in a motel covered in blood with no memory of how he got there. He telephones Scully who drives to the motel to help him. Scully discovers that two rounds have been fired from Mulder's gun, she also traces the owner of the car parked outside Mulder's room. They both travel to the home of David and Amy Cassandra, where theye find them both murdered. Blood from the two victims matches the blood on Mulder's shirt. He is arrested by the detective in charge of the case, Curtis. He is later released when evidence emerges that the Cassandra's were involved in a murder-suicide pact. Scully also discovers traces of the anesthetic Ketamine in Mulder's blood and realizes this could account for Mulder's memory loss. Mulder again has a dream, about the relationship between his mother and the Cigarette Smoking Man. Mulder then confronts his mother. Scully attempts to explain that the drug (Ketamine) is affecting his mind, that his memories should not be trusted.

(Aired - 05/18/97) (Part One)
When two anthropologists, Arlinsky and Babcock, find an alien preserved in ice at the summit of a mountain, they ask Mulder and Scully for help in verifying the remains as alien. As Mulder flies with Arlinksy to collect the remains, Scully examines the ice core specimen taken from the same location as the body. Thereafter Scully is assaulted and thrown down a flight of stairs. Finger prints from the stairwell are matched to a Pentagon researcher Michael Kritschgau. She then confronts Kritschgau in a garage and arrests him. Kritschgau warns Scully that if he goes to jail, the same people who gave her cancer will kill him too. He also tells Mulder that the alien is a fake, an elaborate hoax by the government to divert attention away from itself. Mulder accuses Kritschgau of lying. But when Scully explains to Mulder, that the people behind the hoax, gave her cancer to make him believe the lies. This realization devastates Mulder.... Later Scully is called to Mulder's apartment, where she identifies the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gun-shot wound to the head, as Mulder.
